SA Terroir Wine Awards 2024 Celebrate Excellence Across Diverse Wine Terrains

0

The 19th annual SA Terroir Wine Awards recently celebrated South Africa’s finest wines, highlighting the importance of terroir in wine production. Held at the prestigious Lanzerac Hotel and Spa on 14 August, the event showcased top-quality wines from diverse wine terrains, with accolades awarded to exceptional producers from across the country.

This year’s top honor, the SA Terroir Trophy for the Top Wine overall, was awarded to Springfontein Estate for their Springfontein Single Vineyard Jonathan’s Ridge Pinotage 2018. This remarkable wine hails from the Springfontein Rim Ward near Stanford, demonstrating the unique qualities of its terroir. The victory also coincides with the upcoming centenary of the Pinotage cultivar, a true South African grape variety.

Lourensford Estate in Somerset West emerged as a dominant force, securing both the SA Terroir Trophy for the Top Estate and the Top Terroir Producer. Their national-winning entries for Cap Classique, Merlot, and Petit Sirah played a crucial role in their success, underscoring the estate’s excellence in wine production.

Single-vineyard wines, which originate from a single vineyard, were also a focal point of the awards. The La Vierge Apogée Pinot Noir 2022, produced by La Vierge in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Ward near Hermanus, clinched the SA Terroir Trophy for Top Single-vineyard Wine, exemplifying the distinctiveness of its origin.

Theewater Ward in the Overberg district was recognized as the Top Area, with Eerste Hoop Wine Cellar near Villiersdorp leading the charge. Their Chardonnay and Red Blend entries, along with five other top-performing wines, contributed to this accolade.

Newly recognized wards also made their mark, including the Agter-Paarl Ward, which produced the national Chenin Blanc winner, Windmeul Chenin Blanc Reserve 2022. Additionally, Bellingham’s The Bernard Series Single Vineyard Albariño 2023 was noted as a standout in the competition, showcasing the potential of the rare Spanish Albariño grape.

The Heritage Vineyards category, for vineyards over 35 years old, highlighted three winners, with the 2022 Koelenhof Stellenbosch 1679 Bushvine Chenin Blanc and the 2023 Piekenierskloof Carel van Zyl Old Vine Grenache Noir taking top honors. For the first time, an old-vineyard noble late harvest wine, Neethlingshof Short Story Collection Maria NLH 2024, was recognized as a winner.

The SA Terroir Wine Awards, in collaboration with sponsors SA Litho and WinField United SA, continue to honor the exceptional quality and uniqueness of South African wines, setting the stage for next year’s 20th anniversary.

Botswana and Namibia’s Import Bans Strain SA Ties, Prompting Diplomatic Talks

0

The recent bans on South African fruit and vegetable imports by Botswana and Namibia have sparked concerns over trade relations and economic cooperation in the Southern African region.

Botswana’s recent decision to temporarily ban the import of South African fruit and vegetables has raised concerns over its impact on trade relations and broader economic ties between the two nations. This measure, which came into effect on 17 June 2024 and is set to last until 31 August 2024, has sparked a warning from the Agricultural Business Chamber of South Africa (Agbiz) regarding the potential strain on political and economic connections.

According to the Botswana government, the ban is part of a broader strategy aimed at bolstering local agriculture and achieving food self-sufficiency. Additionally, Botswana has extended restrictions on various fresh produce imports, with some measures in place until 2025. While these measures are intended to support local farmers, they also pose significant challenges for South African exporters and consumers who may face higher food prices as a result.

Theo Boshoff of Agbiz highlighted the delicate balance that needs to be struck between supporting local agriculture and ensuring affordable food prices for consumers. He noted that while it is essential to consider the interests of both Botswana’s farmers and South African exporters, the impact on consumers cannot be overlooked. “With vegetables like potatoes, onions, and tomatoes, demand can fluctuate throughout the year. These measures help retailers plan, but clarity from government to government is necessary to avoid consumers bearing the brunt of high food prices,” Boshoff said.

South Africa Seeks Diplomatic Resolution

In response to the growing tension, South Africa’s Agriculture Minister, John Steenhuisen, announced on 14 August  that he plans to engage with his counterparts in Botswana and Namibia to discuss the citrus import bans and seek a resolution. Namibia’s restriction, in place from 2021 to 2025, along with Botswana’s temporary ban, both aim to promote local agricultural development. However, Steenhuisen emphasized the importance of dialogue to prevent escalating trade tensions and to uphold the principles of the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) agreement, which advocates for open borders and industry cooperation.

Speaking at the Agri Limpopo congress in Modimolle, Limpopo, Steenhuisen expressed optimism about finding a mutual agreement. He stated, “We believe we can find an amicable solution. Blocking each other’s products is not helpful to either country. I hope we can sit down with our Botswana and Namibia counterparts and reach a compromise, as per our SACU agreement, to avoid a trade war.”

The ongoing discussions will be crucial in determining the future of trade relations between South Africa and its neighbours, with the potential for broader implications across the Southern African region.

Extreme Weather in Western Cape: July 2024 Sets Record Rainfall

0

The Western Cape experienced an extraordinary weather event in July 2024, with record-breaking rainfall that exceeded all historical records for the region. This extreme weather, marked by relentless cold fronts and intense downpours, has become a focal point for discussions about climate change and its impacts on weather patterns.

Record-Breaking Rainfall Shatters Historical Averages

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) reported that several weather stations in Cape Town and surrounding areas recorded rainfall amounts far exceeding their historical averages. Notably, the Cape Town City station in Oranjezicht registered 317.6 mm of rain, shattering the long-term average of 128.0 mm for July. This total is the highest monthly rainfall recorded for July since records began in 1960.

Similarly, the Cape Town International Airport station recorded the highest rainfall since the station’s inception in July 1956, with totals exceeding three times the average for the month. This highlights the intensity and impact of the weather systems that dominated the region throughout July.

Other areas in the Western Cape also reported record-breaking rainfall. The Newlands station at the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens received over 500 mm of rain, making it the wettest month on record for this station since 1999. Stations in Franschhoek, Kenilworth, and Villiersdorp also set new records, surpassing the totals recorded during the severe storm of September 2023.

The Cape Winelands, including Paarl, Worcester, and Jonkershoek, experienced substantial rainfall, with long-term records being broken. The heavy rains caused widespread damage, including flooding, burst riverbanks, and infrastructure damage, leading to the displacement of people in various parts of the province.

Climate Change and the Rise of Extreme Weather Events

Climate researchers have noted that the intensity and frequency of such extreme weather events are becoming more common, likely influenced by global climate change. The director of the Alliance for Collaboration on Climate & Earth Systems Science (ACCESS), Dr. Neville Sweijd, emphasized that the recent extreme weather is part of a broader trend of increasingly severe weather patterns.

While it is still too early to definitively attribute this specific event to climate change, the correlation between rising global temperatures and more frequent extreme weather events is becoming clearer. The increased evaporation from warmer oceans may be contributing to the heavier rainfall experienced in the Western Cape.

As the region recovers from this record-breaking rainfall, the importance of preparedness and resilience in the face of extreme weather cannot be overstated. The July 2024 rainfall serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of weather patterns and the need for communities to be vigilant and adaptable in an era of changing climates.

Vyfde Verjaarsdag van NAMPO Kaap: ’n Landbouhoogtepunt wat Ekonomiese Groei en Samewerking Bevorder

0

Climate Crisis threatens SA Agriculture and Food Security

0

The recent scientific synthesis led by the University of Cape Town highlights the dire impact of climate change on South Africa’s agriculture, posing severe threats to the country’s food security, economic stability, and employment rates within the sector.

Agricultural Vulnerability to Climate Extremes

South Africa’s agricultural sector, which employs about 21% of the total workforce, is highly susceptible to climate variability. The report indicates a drastic reduction in crop yields and livestock productivity due to increased temperatures and altered rainfall patterns. With the majority of farming in South Africa being rain-fed, the frequency and intensity of droughts have led to significant water shortages, directly impacting crop and livestock production. For instance, the severe drought between 2015 and 2017 drastically reduced water availability in the Cape Town area, stressing the agricultural outputs and escalating food prices.

Shifts in Rainfall and Temperature Patterns

The synthesis predicts that even with a global warming cap at 2°C, South Africa will experience hotter and more frequent heatwaves, further exacerbating the risk of heat stress both to humans and animals. On the other hand, regions like Western Cape and Eastern Cape might see increased rainfall, heightening the risk of flooding, which can destroy crops and erode valuable topsoil. This presents a dual challenge for farmers, who must adapt to both extremes of drought and flood.

Economic Impacts and Food Security

Agriculture contributes significantly to South Africa’s GDP and export earnings, with critical exports including fruits, wine, and vegetables. Climate change threatens this economic backbone by jeopardizing the production of these high-value crops, thus potentially leading to a decrease in export earnings and increased unemployment. The potential reduction in agricultural productivity due to climate change also threatens national food security, exacerbating existing issues of malnutrition and undernutrition in vulnerable populations.

Adaptation and Resilience Building

The report emphasizes the urgent need for adaptation strategies that include the development of drought-resistant crop varieties, improved water management techniques, and sustainable farming practices that enhance soil health and water retention. Furthermore, the implementation of more robust agricultural policies to support farmers, especially smallholders who are disproportionately affected, is crucial.

The Climate Change Act offers a framework for mitigating these impacts through national adaptation strategies that must be robust and inclusive. As the situation evolves, ongoing research, policy adjustment, and international cooperation will be essential to safeguard South Africa’s agricultural future against the advancing threats of climate change. This approach will not only protect the livelihoods of millions who depend on agriculture, but also secure the economic stability of the nation in the face of environmental change.

Highlights from IFPA Southern Africa 2024: Weather, Markets, and Logistics

0

The International Fresh Produce Association’s annual Southern Africa Conference, held from 5-6 August at Century City Conference Centre, brought together key stakeholders from the region’s fresh produce industry. This year’s conference was particularly significant, as it was the first since South Africa’s historic 2024 elections, which ushered in the first government of national unity in nearly a century. The event served as a critical meeting point for industry professionals to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the sector in this new political landscape.

Transnet CEO Addresses Industry Concerns

A key highlight of the event was the much-anticipated presentation by Ms Michelle Phillips, Group CEO of Transnet. Her address resonated deeply with the attendees, particularly those concerned with the logistical challenges that have been plaguing the industry. Ms Phillips, accompanied by several of her Transnet colleagues, candidly discussed the daily hurdles faced by the organization, particularly the declining number of shipping services to Cape Town. As one exporter poignantly noted, the lack of shipping options in Cape Town, a city once favored by global shipping lines, represents a significant obstacle in the industry’s path to recovery.

Weather Woes: Unpredictability Strains the Industry

Weather unpredictability was another recurring theme throughout the conference. Delegates exchanged concerns about the severe impact of recent climatic events on farm planning and produce availability. The town of Citrusdal in the Western Cape, for instance, has been hit hard by flooding, with its main bridge washed away for the second time in as many years. The Western Cape, including areas like Ceres and Grabouw, has experienced an exceptionally wet winter, securing the region’s water supply but also bringing challenges for farmers.

Citrus Exports Hit Hard by Frost and Juice Prices

In Limpopo Province, a severe frost last month devastated citrus harvests, leading to significant losses. Exporters are currently grappling with a shortage of oranges for export, as many producers are tempted by the high juice prices, which offer lower risk compared to exporting. However, this shift towards juicing could result in a loss of market share, particularly with the influx of Egyptian oranges in markets like India. While citrus prices in China are currently high, the lack of volume suggests that this trend may not last long.

Vegetable Prices Soar Amid Market Volatility

The erratic weather has also had a profound effect on vegetable prices, with green peppers being a prime example. The price of a 5kg box of green peppers skyrocketed from R40 to R220 within two weeks due to frost damage. This surge in prices has led to reduced orders from customers, as noted by a South African fresh produce distributor. The distributor expressed concern over the increasing difficulty in supplying local retailers with reasonably priced products, as more produce is being exported at higher prices, leaving less available for the domestic market.
