2024 FNB Sauvignon Blanc SA Top 10 Awards: Celebrating Site-Specific Excellence

0

Producers of South Africa’s top-selling cultivar make exceptional site-specific wines.

In a closely contested challenge, the judging panel of the 2024 FNB Sauvignon Blanc SA Top 10 awarded no less than seven wards, six districts, and three regions.

Out of the 160 wines entered by 91 producers, the 2023 vintage stood out with seven winners in the Top 10. Six of the winning wines are wooded, a style that has increasingly been making its mark over the 18 years of this annual competition.

Sauvignon Blanc South Africa announced the winners on Wednesday 16 October at De Meye Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, with Ryan O’Connor and Success Lekabe as masters of ceremonies. Guests were challenged to solve a quiz of music and wine notes to identify the winning wines from 20 finalists, with ZZ Top, Queen, Harry Styles, and André Rieu giving a helping hand!

This year’s Top 10 (in alphabetical order) are:

  • Alvi’s Drift Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2023 (wooded) (Scherpenheuvel, Worcester)
  • Cederberg Wines Ghost Corner Wild Ferment 2023 (wooded) (Elim, Cape Agulhas)
  • Diemersdal Winter Ferment Sauvignon Blanc 2024 (Durbanville)
  • Flagstone Free Run Sauvignon Blanc 2023 (Coastal Region)
  • Hermanuspietersfontein Kat met die Houtbeen Sauvignon Blanc 2022 (wooded) (Sunday’s Glen, Walker Bay)
  • Iona Elgin Highlands Sauvignon Blanc 2024 (Elgin)
  • Lomond Sugarbush Sauvignon Blanc 2023 (Cape Agulhas)
  • Maastricht The Contour Sauvignon Blanc 2023 (wooded) (Durbanville)
  • Stark-Condé Round Mountain Sauvignon Blanc 2023 (wooded) (Jonkershoek Valley, Stellenbosch)
  • Zevenwacht Z Collection Sauvignon Blanc 2023 (wooded) (Polkadraai Hills, Stellenbosch)

The Top 10 features five winners from the Coastal Region, four from the Cape South Coast, and one from the Breede River Valley. A total of seven wards boast winners, representing six districts, with two winners each for Durbanville, Cape Agulhas, and Stellenbosch, and one each from Elgin, Sunday’s Glen (Walker Bay), and Scherpenheuvel (Worcester).

The judging panel was convened by Cape Wine Master Dr. Winifred Bowman and featured specialist judges Johann Fourie, head winemaker at Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate; Dr. Carien Coetzee, oenologist at Basic Wine; Morgan Steyn, winemaker at De Grendel Wines; and Mahalia Kotjane, owner-winemaker of Three Quarter Wines. The panel also included two protégé judges: Kelsey Nel, winemaker at Hartenberg Wine Estate, and Anke van Zyl, an intern at Neil Ellis Wines.

“Sauvignon Blanc is in an exciting phase, as showcased by the versatile styles from different areas in the Top 10,” says RJ Botha, Chairman of Sauvignon Blanc SA. “The six wooded winners show our winemakers’s craftmanship in developing different elements of this noble grape, building texture, and adding layers. The excellent performance of the 2023 vintage again confirms the aging potential of South African Sauvignon Blanc. Many thanks to our partners FNB and EVER Solutions for their contribution to our success,” says Botha.

This year’s competition, the only competition fully dedicated to Sauvignon Blanc, was once again supported by the Top 10 title partner, FNB, and platinum partner, EVER Solutions. Ever has been a leading international producer of winemaking solutions since 1973, trading in South Africa since 2006 as EVER Solutions.

Stephan Claassen, FNB Commercial’s Provincial Head for the Western and Eastern Cape, congratulated the Top 10 winners, who stood out above the rest to showcase exceptional wine-making skills and talent, in a closely contested challenge. “Our longstanding partnership with Sauvignon Blanc SA goes a long way in promoting the global stature of South African wines, as well as the local development of this sector. This platform allows producers to be recognised and rewarded for their innovation and excellence, enhancing their potential for growth. Well done to all the producers for ensuring that our home-produced Sauvignon Blanc cultivar continues to sustain international recognition for its quality and standards.

Furthermore, our involvement goes beyond the sponsorship of the awards, and is focused on supporting the entire ecosystem around the wine industry, including the various businesses in the value chain and stimulating job creation in the agri sector,” adds Claassen.

SA and Saudi Arabia to Strengthen Trade Ties with Comprehensive Action Plan

0

South Africa is committed to enhancing the export of value-added goods and services to Saudi Arabia.

“We must strive for a mutually beneficial trade relationship,” said Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Parks Tau at the opening of the South Africa – Saudi Arabia Business Forum at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg recently.

Tau announced that South Africa and Saudi Arabia have agreed to consolidate several initiatives into a comprehensive action plan. Over the next few weeks, we will consolidate several initiatives into an action plan for implementation over the next two years and institutionalise the relationship in that way.”

Minister Parks Tau announces a consolidated plan to enhance value-added exports and foster a mutually beneficial trade relationship.

“We will take direct responsibility for overseeing the implementation of this plan, ensuring that we deliver on these commitments,” he said.

He highlighted that the cornerstone of economic relations between South Africa and Saudi Arabia has been guided by the structured framework of the Joint Economic Commission.

“Within the Joint Economic Commission, we have the South Africa and Saudi Arabia Joint Business Council, which has cemented and strengthened our commercial and economic linkages,” Tau said.

He underscored the importance of diversifying South Africa’s trade profile, moving beyond a commodity-based relationship.

Trade between the two countries has shown significant growth, with South Africa’s exports to Saudi Arabia increasing from US$6.6 billion in 2022 to US$8.1 billion in 2023. However, the trade relationship remains skewed in favour of Saudi Arabia.

Diversifying Trade Beyond Commodities with Focus on Key Sectors

South Africa aims to expand exports in sectors such as agro-processing, technology, and minerals beneficiation, leveraging the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

“Our collective efforts over the years have shown notable growth in overall trade. As a country, we want to enhance our export of value-added goods and services to Saudi Arabia.
“It is important that, as we strive for a mutually beneficial trading relationship, we intensify cooperation in value-added sectors such as agro-processing, infrastructure, minerals beneficiation, services, technology and skills transfer, healthcare, automotive and agriculture,” Tau said.

He highlighted the opportunities presented by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and encouraged Saudi businesses to explore investment prospects in South Africa.

“Just as Saudi Arabia is positioned as the gateway to the Middle East, South Africa is the gateway to a dynamic continent with great prospects. We encourage Saudi companies to utilise South Africa’s strengths and take advantage of the free movement of goods, services, and people across Africa.”

“I also want to call on South African businesses to be part of the new momentum of international investors coming into South Africa. Our opportunities for investment span sectors such as renewable energy, oil storage and refining, tourism, hospitality, and the ocean economy,” he said.

Tau expressed optimism about the future of South Africa–Saudi Arabia relations.

“I am encouraged by the enthusiasm of Saudi Arabian and South African businesses. I sincerely believe that the strong ties of goodwill between our countries will translate into strong economic gains,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za

Vegtech Netafim Donates Hydroponic Greenhouse to Boost Food Security

Ahead of World Food Day, commemorated on 16 October 2024, Vegtech Netafim, a provider of growing solutions, has made a significant contribution to local food security efforts by donating a hydroponic greenhouse tunnel valued at R220,000 to the Living Soils Community Learning Farm in Stellenbosch. This initiative, which is directly aligned with this year’s World Food Day theme: “Right to foods for a better life and a better future”, is part of Vegtech Netafim’s 2024 outreach program to promote precision agriculture and support community projects.

The Vegtech Netafim hydroponic greenhouse tunnels empower farmers and communities to grow fresh produce regardless of external factors like climate and soil conditions.

The donation will not only boost the farm’s agricultural yields but also serve as a rich educational platform for the agricultural management interns, farm employees and managers, allowing them to explore precision agriculture techniques that promote sustainability and efficiency. The tunnel is equipped with precision farming technology that allows crops to be grown in a hydroponic medium, reducing water usage and increasing yield – a powerful combination that aligns with the principles of regenerative farming.

The Living Soils Community Learning Farm is a partnership project between Woolworths, Spier Wine Farm and the Sustainability Institute.  The farm aims to improve long-term food security by providing a space to educate and empower young and emerging farmers, particularly women and youth, in food and farming livelihoods. Furthermore, the nutritious food that the farm grows is sold, exchanged and donated to stakeholders who provide direct food security initiatives to at-risk children and households

“As we approach World Food Day, this donation is particularly meaningful,” said Namhla Skweyiya, Project Manager at the Living Soils Community Learning Farm. “Access to nutritious, sustainably grown food is essential for a better life and future, and this hydroponic greenhouse tunnel will greatly enhance our ability to provide that. It is also an excellent learning opportunity for our interns, who will be exposed to precision agriculture. This will expand their agricultural knowledge and improve their future employment opportunities while directly supporting our mission to grow more food with fewer resources.”

The hydroponic greenhouse tunnel will allow the Living Soils Community Learning Farm to grow a variety of vegetable crops, including tomatoes and peppers in a partially controlled environment – all year-round. The technology enables farming in coir – an artificial hydroponic medium – rather than traditional soil, ensuring optimal growth conditions.

“We were looking for a cause that resonated with our values,” said Barney Isralls, Vegtech Netafim Managing Director. “The Living Soils Community Learning Farm stood out because of the exceptional work they do within the community, and their partnership with reputable organisations like Woolworths and Spier Wine Farm assured us they were the right fit. By donating this hydroponic greenhouse tunnel, we aim to show how modern farming practices can not only improve productivity but also enhance the quality of life for the people involved.”

In addition to donating the hydroponic greenhouse tunnel, Vegtech Netafim has committed to providing high-level technical and agronomical support to the farm, ensuring that the Living Soils Community Learning Farm team has access to the best resources for long-term success.

As the world focuses on the theme of “Right to foods for a better life and a better future” for World Food Day, this partnership between Vegtech Netafim and the Living Soils Community Learning Farm is a tangible step toward making that right a reality. The farming technology introduced by Vegtech Netafim will empower the farm to produce more food sustainably, creating a direct positive impact on the availability of fresh, locally grown produce in the surrounding communities.

Celebrate Garden Day 2024: Host a Garden Party and Wear Your Flower Crown on October 20th

0

Gardens in every shape, form and size have the potential to bring us together, which is why Pietman Diener, friend of Garden Day 2024 and head gardener at Stellenbosch’s Rustenberg Wine Estate is calling on all plant people to put on a flower crown and join the Garden Day movement by hosting a Garden Day party in their gardens or green spaces on Sunday 20 October for this year’s Garden Day. Anything (and everything!) goes, from a lavish lunch on the lawn, to platters on the patio with your pot plants or tea for two under your favourite tree.

“Garden Day is a celebration for garden enthusiasts and plant lovers. It’s perfect for those who enjoy inviting others into their gardens and green spaces, as well as for anyone who loves entertaining and spending time with family and friends,” says Diener. “So draw up your guestlist, invite your besties and channel your inner hostess for a celebration in the garden!”

Flower Crowns, Fruit and Foliage: Friends of Garden Day Celebrate In Style!

Gardening shakes us up and calms us down. It grows patience, encourages us to fully observe and each time one plants something, it feels like a pronouncement of faith in the future. Gardens connect us to the natural world and inspire us to care for the ground and the lives that grow from it. No one knows this better than Diener who agrees that our environment is critical to our wellbeing.

Diener is all about the life-long joy plants and gardens bring to our lives. He openly admits to his home garden being a happy jumble. ‘At home I’m not a neat gardener, I love a frothy mix,’ he laughs, ‘it’s not about it looking perfect.’

Pietman intends to celebrate Garden Day in his garden at home with the special people in his life.  ‘Garden Day is an extension of my love of gardening and life is too short not to do what you love,’ he says. ‘On Garden Day we will eat from the garden!’ he says. After a bumper quince crop, that includes syrupy homemade preserves as well as homegrown, fresh garden salad, asparagus, beans… and flowers. ‘Flowers from the garden are very important in our house – and to share with our family and friends,’ he says.

Ready, Steady … Go (or should we say grow!)

Your garden gathering could be anything from a sumptuous lunch or garden tea party to a picnic – or simply relaxing, feet up, under your favourite garden tree.  Most importantly, don’t forget to wear a flower crown!

From posters to customisable invitations and guidelines to make your own flower crown, there are plenty of materials to help you prepare for a celebration, create your own invitations and support posts using our customisable templates! Uniondale Celebrates World Food Day 2024, Highlighting Food Security and Sustainability

0

On Friday, 11 October  2024, the Uniondale community gathered at their local sports field to mark the United Nation’s (UN) World Food Day (WFD).

Founded by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization on 16 October 1945, WFD has become one of the most celebrated events in the UN calendar. This year’s theme is “Right to food for a better life and a better future.”

The day, hosted in partnership with the Western Cape Department of Agriculture (WCDOA), the Garden Route District Municipality, the George Municipality, and Casidra, reminded people of the need to ensure food security and access to nutritious food.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Mayor of the George Municipality, Jackie von Brandis, said that data indicated that 30% of residents within the George municipal area experienced hunger. “While there are  117 Nutritional Centres in George and six in Uniondale, they are still insufficient. To bridge the gap and support those in need, we have begun a pilot project with the WCDOA to convert all illegal dumping sites in George into vegetable gardens.”

The Executive Mayor of the Garden Route, Andrew Stroebel, highlighted that food security is also about dignity, economic development, and empowerment. “The Garden Route District Municipality is committed to creating a model of resilience where all residents have access to healthy food.”

“ One of the most promising initiatives is establishing a honeybush tea processing plant.  This initiative will stimulate job creation, giving smallholder farmers greater access to the honeybush value chain. The Mayor added that “agriculture could be the cornerstone of sustainable development in the Garden Route District.”

Western Cape Minister of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism, Dr Ivan Meyer, said, “Our farmers produce enough food to feed the South African population, but hunger is still an issue for many. We must all support efforts to end hunger and promote food security. WFD is an opportunity to come together as a community and work towards a world where no one goes to bed hungry.”

In the lead-up to WFD 2024, the WCDOA and its partners have successfully initiated several food security initiatives in Uniondale and Harlem, a testament to our collective efforts and a source of encouragement for the future.

Western Cape Head of Agriculture, Dr Mogale Sebopetsa, commented, “The WCDOA has implemented 100 household agricultural food production initiatives in Haarlem (34) and Uniondale (64). In addition, we have established two subsistence projects at Mina Moo Kleurterskool and Chris Nissan Creche, both in Uniondale and two school food garden projects at Haarlem Senior Secondary School and Avontuur Primary School. A further 78 household agricultural food security initiatives will be established over the coming days.”

Beneficiaries of household gardens received production inputs, garden tools, water tanks, and training in vegetable production. Haarlem Secondary School Project and Avontuur Primary School Food Gardens were supported with fencing, garden tools, irrigation systems, production inputs and vermicompost/earth compost to enable sustainable vegetable production.

Chris Nissan Crèche and Mina Moo Crèche were assisted with production inputs, planter boxes, garden tools, watering cans, water harvesting system and seedlings.

Two of the highlights of the WCDOA’s annual WFD event, the Food Mountain and the school poster competition, again drew considerable attention.

With  sponsors’ support and the staff members’ generosity, food collected for Food Mountain was donated to five local NGOs: Haarlem Speelskool (Haarlem), Uniep (Uniondale), Feladelfia United Revival Mission (Uniondale), Avontuur Speelskool (Avontuur) and Addict Lives Matter (Uniondale)

Speaking on behalf of local NGOs, Anthony Blaauw of UNIEP said that the need in Uniondale was great. “The NGO sector in Uniondale remains committed to partnering with government departments to address their communities’ needs.”

Local schools, Dirk Bischoff Primary and Avontuur Primary School, enthusiastically responded to the annual poster competition, which emphasised and created awareness of the challenges of food insecurity in our communities.

Minister Meyer said, “WFD is a great opportunity to get our children thinking about nutritious food and how it can be sustainably produced and responsibly consumed and distributed. However, the best way to tackle food insecurity is through a job. We are determined to realise a future where the Western Cape’s economy thrives, achieving an annual growth rate of 5%. This growth would result in hundreds of thousands of new jobs, lifting people out of poverty, fostering prosperity and giving them dignity,” concluded Minister Meyer.
