Demand for South African apples is reaching new heights in China, where standing out in the world’s largest apple-producing country requires far more than supplying quality fruit—it requires earning consumers’ trust. That trust reached a major milestone this month as Topsun Fresh, Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing’s long-standing Chinese importer, invested its own capital to launch a high-impact billboard campaign promoting the Tru-Cape and Flash Gala brands.
Believed to be a historic first for the South African pome fruit industry, the bold move signals a powerful vote of confidence in South African produce within the world’s most competitive fruit market.
Dominating China’s Largest Import Hubs
The prominent campaign strategically targets two of China’s premier wholesale fruit hubs, where buyers face an endless array of global choices.
One giant billboard commands attention in the importer trading zone at the Guangzhou Jiangnan Wholesale Market—the primary hub for imported fruit in China, handling roughly 70% of the country’s fresh fruit transactions. A second billboard stands at the Shanghai Huizhan Wholesale Market, a facility dedicated entirely to imported fruit, with Topsun Fresh already eyeing additional high-visibility sites within the market.
While South African citrus brands have previously utilized market billboards, Tru-Cape is the first South African apple and pear exporter to capture buyers’ eyes in this manner.
Building Brand Trust Over Price Alone
For Topsun Fresh General Manager Neil Wan, the billboards represent a critical strategic tool to differentiate South African fruit and foster long-term customer loyalty. Chinese buyers, Wan notes, increasingly prioritize reliability over price.
“Customers are prepared to pay more for fruit that consistently delivers on quality,” Wan explains, attributing this success to continuous investments by Tru-Cape’s growers and packhouses.
Furthermore, Tru-Cape’s hands-on approach sets it apart. Technical, marketing, and commercial teams regularly visit China to align directly with local packaging requirements, market trends, and buyer preferences.
Matching the Shift in Consumer Demand
The campaign comes at an ideal time, as Chinese consumer habits have evolved dramatically over the last decade. Imported apples, once purchased primarily as luxury gifts, have transformed into convenient daily snacks.
This shifting preference perfectly mirrors South Africa’s key strengths. Chinese consumers now favour smaller, sweeter, redder apples that fit busy, on-the-go lifestyles at school or work. South Africa’s natural production profile delivers precisely on these demands, offering the sweet flavor and crisp eating quality that drive repeat purchases.

A Sweet Future in China
Tru-Cape Marketing Director Conrad Fick welcomed the landmark initiative, viewing it as clear proof of the strong, mutual commitment between South African growers and Chinese importers.
Since gaining market access over a decade ago, South African apples have overcome initial skepticism regarding their smaller sizing to build a formidable reputation. Fick emphasizes that while strict phytosanitary protocols govern entry, China remains one of Tru-Cape’s most vital long-term growth frontiers with opportunities far exceeding current export volumes.
By doubling down on quality, branding, and strategic partnerships, South Africa’s apple industry is primed to carve out an even greater share of the Chinese market.
