Standard Bank is intensifying its efforts to assist flood-stricken communities in the Eastern and Western Cape regions, where recent floods have claimed 11 lives and left many homeless, particularly in areas like Franschhoek, Kleinmond, Hermanus, Betty’s Bay, and McGregor. The bank is making a substantial contribution of R1.5 million to support relief efforts and is actively mobilizing its OneFarm Share ecosystem to ensure farmers can provide produce to these affected areas.
In addition to the financial contribution, Standard Bank is generously donating tons of fruits and vegetables to non-profit organizations. OneFarm Share, their digital platform, plays a crucial role in amplifying the impact of food donations by simplifying the procurement process of farm produce directly from farmers and food producers. This approach ensures efficient delivery to food distribution partners at a low cost.
Niki Neumann, Head of Agribusiness Platforms and Innovation for Business and Commercial Banking at Standard Bank, addressed the pressing issues of climate change and persistent food insecurity in our country. She stressed the importance of collaborative efforts to find innovative solutions to tackle these challenges.
OneFarm Share has achieved remarkable success in matching over 19,250 tonnes of produce, including excess and out-of-spec produce from registered farmers, with a total value exceeding R 88 million. More than 60% of this value directly benefits emerging farmers, with an additional 22% supporting female-owned farmer enterprises. This initiative has significantly aided 444 small-scale farmers, enabling them to earn over R55 million.
Standard Bank is actively promoting sustainable agricultural practices and forging partnerships that focus on climate-smart agriculture, energy, water security, equipment, and best practices. Through OneFarm Share, the bank aims to facilitate access to trade markets for farmers, enhance financial inclusion, optimize supply-chain efficiency, and reduce food waste on farms, thereby fostering innovation and growth throughout the agricultural value chain.
