Stanford in Bloom and Chelsea Flowers in Stanford return for their third consecutive year from 12 to 27 September 2026. The annual festival brings international acclaim directly to the Overberg region, showcasing the brilliance of South Africa’s floral diversity alongside local agricultural and horticultural ingenuity.
The focal point of the two-week event is the local assembly of South Africa’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show exhibit. Awarded a Gold Medal and named “Best Exhibit in the Great Pavilion” in London, landscape designer Leon Kluge and artist gardener Tristan Woudberg are currently assembling their masterpiece, Life After Fire, on home soil.
Fynbos Regeneration and Wildfire Dynamics
Life After Fire focuses on the ecological role wildfire plays in the lifecycle and regeneration of the Cape Floral Kingdom. Sourced directly from the Western Cape mountainous areas impacted by recent fires, the display features thousands of burnt protea branches and a sculptural vortex of charred wood.
The installation combines structural remnants with over 20,000 cut protea stems, flowering bulbs, and native orchids to demonstrate ecological recovery. Notable botanical features include a natural stream ecosystem housing rare Disa orchids and carnivorous sundew plants, alongside high-altitude Rhodohypoxis specimens native to the Drakensberg range.
Agricultural Demos, Culinary Arts, and Village Festivities
In addition to the central botanical display, the festival offers an extensive program focusing on local production, horticulture, and regional flora:
Horticultural Workshops & Talks: Masterclasses covering native plant propagation, botanical design, and behind-the-scenes insights from designers Leon Kluge and Tristan Woudberg.
Grootbos Florilegium Exhibition: A showcase of fine botanical illustrations documenting endemic species and rare fire ephemerals—plants that germinate and bloom exclusively following fire events.
Klein River Cheese Demo Kitchen: Culinary workshops and product demonstrations featuring regional artisanal producers, local winemakers, and Overberg chefs.
Community Market: A central tented market on the Stanford Village Green showcasing local produce, agricultural crafts, and botanical products.
