South Africa’s agricultural sector has received a major boost ahead of the spring season. Livestock farmers, breeders, and industry role players can officially look forward to the highly anticipated return of live animals at NAMPO ALFA 2026. Scheduled to take place on 2 and 3 October 2026 at the renowned NAMPO Park in Bothaville, this year’s expo marks a monumental milestone for the livestock sector.
As South Africa’s leading platform for livestock, hunting, outdoor living, and agricultural skills, NAMPO ALFA has faced severe operational hurdles in recent years. Alongside many other prominent agricultural events, the expo’s ability to host cloven-hoofed animals was heavily restricted due to the dual impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and widespread foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreaks. The announcement that livestock will be accommodated once again signals a triumphant step forward for the industry. Notably, NAMPO ALFA is the first major agricultural event in 2026 to announce that livestock will be exhibited on-site.
Prioritizing Biosecurity and Safety
While the return of live animals has sparked widespread excitement, organizers emphasize that the decision is being executed with the utmost responsibility. The entire livestock component will remain strictly subject to rigid biosecurity measures and specialized health protocols.
According to Dr. Danie Odendaal, the veterinary expert who drafted South Africa’s very first biosecurity protocol for livestock events back in 2018, recent advancements have made this revival possible. Dr. Odendaal noted that improved access to vaccines and steady progress made with national vaccination strategies allow the industry to move forward responsibly. The core principle governing the 2026 event is absolute compliance; only animals that fully meet the stringent health and biosecurity requirements will be permitted access to the grounds. The primary objective is to facilitate participation and celebrate the sector while prioritizing the safety of the animals and the broader agricultural community.
Dr. Dirk Strydom, Managing Director of NAMPO, reiterated this cautious stance, noting that the safety of exhibitors, visitors, and the animals remains a non-negotiable priority. While NAMPO ALFA is an essential commercial platform for the livestock industry, Strydom emphasized that it must be executed in a responsible manner. Standard biosecurity checks will be strictly enforced, and further details regarding the final protocol will be communicated to participants as they are locked in.

Renewed Certainty for Breeders and Exhibitors
For breeders and breed societies, this early July announcement provides much-needed operational runway. Lizette Vermaak, co-organiser of the livestock programme, highlighted that the declaration allows stakeholders to begin planning with genuine certainty. Because the preparation of elite show animals requires months of specialized conditioning and logistics, the timely notice gives breeders the opportunity to prepare their animals properly while allowing breed societies to fully utilize their designated exhibition spaces.
A Comprehensive Family and Agricultural Lineup
Visitors attending the two-day expo can expect a packed livestock itinerary curated by Albert Loubser. Key highlights officially confirmed for the programme include:
The Old Mutual National Interbreed Championships and the National Interbreed Association’s dedicated programme.
The Voermol Mega Ox competition, showcasing the finest heavy-weight cattle.
The Farm Skills National Agricultural Schools Programme, highlighting youth development in the livestock sector.
An extensive small stock and large stock showcase, featuring practical breed introductions for emerging farmers and judges, alongside a professional herd evaluation conducted by Pikkie Uys.
Beyond the agricultural rings, NAMPO ALFA 2026 is expanding its lifestyle and family-focused entertainment. The weekend will debut Afrikaans @ NAMPO ALFA, a vibrant music festival running alongside the main event. To accommodate traveling families and enthusiasts, dedicated on-site camping opportunities have been introduced. Attendees can also look forward to Landbouweekblad’s popular “Vir die Boer” programme. Wrapping up the weekend, a special day of prayer and a gospel festival will be hosted on the NAMPO Park grounds on Sunday, 4 October, immediately following the conclusion of the main expo.
