On 9 October 2026, the South African agricultural sector gathered across different regional venues to celebrate the standout visionaries, resilience, and leadership shaping the country’s farming future. The regional chapters of Agricultural Writers SA hosted their annual awards ceremonies simultaneously, honouring top producers, innovative emerging market players, and technical specialists driving local economic development and food security.
Coastal Champions Take Centre Stage
At the !Xhariep Agricultural Writers SA Awards, sponsored by Nedbank and hosted at Durbanville Hills, the Western Cape’s top talent received top honours. Stephan Beukes of Dennegeur Farms earned the title of Western Cape Farmer of the Year for his exemplary leadership, resilience, and operational excellence. Sharing the spotlight were Angelo Marman of Abitz Farming (Western Cape) and Ikamva Lethu Farms (Eastern Cape), who were jointly named New Entrants to Commercial Farming of the Year. Their achievements highlight the growing strength and expansion of commercial agriculture across the southern provinces.

Northern Regions Honour Leading Innovators
Meanwhile, Agricultural Writers SA North gathered in Pretoria—backed by key industry sponsors, including NWK Limited—to crown regional winners across Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, and KwaZulu-Natal.
In Limpopo, Agri Limpopo celebrated Willem Groothof of Willand Boerdery in the Settlers area, who was named Limpopo Farmer of the Year 2026. Groothof’s impact extends far beyond his own farm gate; as a key member of Grain SA’s executive committee and chairman of the Sorghum Working Group, he has been instrumental in cultivar trials, farmer information days, and industry-wide knowledge sharing.

In the New Entrant category, Mpumalanga’s Sizo Tshabalala took top honours as the province’s New Entrant to Commercial Agriculture of the Year. Representing Tshabalala Farming, he noted that the recognition not only validates his team’s hard work and opens doors across the agricultural value chain, but also reinforces their mission to mentor and attract more young people into commercial agriculture.
Rounding out the regional honours, Ikageng Maluleke (KwaZulu-Natal) and Jade Smith (Gauteng) were celebrated as joint candidates for Agriculturist of the Year, highlighting the critical role technical expertise plays in sustainable food production.
The Road to the National Stage
Industry leaders emphasized that platforming these agricultural champions is vital for fostering innovation, inspiring the next generation, and securing the sector’s long-term sustainability.
All regional winners in the Farmer of the Year, Agriculturist of the Year, and New Entrant to Commercial Agriculture categories now advance as official nominees to the national stage. The ultimate national winners will be crowned at the prestigious Agricultural Writers SA National Farmer of the Year Awards ceremony on 13 November 2026.
