Grain SA Awards Honour Producers Building South Africa’s Agricultural Future

FarmingGrain SA Awards Honour Producers Building South Africa’s Agricultural Future

The 27th annual Grain SA Awards ceremony, held under the theme “Building for Tomorrow” at the Birchwood Hotel & Conference Centre in Boksburg, celebrated excellence, resilience, and sustainability across South Africa’s grain sector. The flagship event brought together producers, government leaders, agribusiness executives, and development partners to recognise farmers whose commitment to innovation and sound management guarantees national food security and economic growth.

Pieter Nortje Named 2026 Grain Producer of the Year

The evening’s highest honor, the 2026 Grain SA/Syngenta Grain Producer of the Year award, was presented to Pieter Nortje of Sitrusrand Boerdery in the Eastern Cape. Selected following a rigorous assessment process of farm visits and expert evaluation, Nortje was celebrated alongside fellow finalists Henk Michau and Neethling Dippenaar for demonstrating exceptional resource management and continuous operational growth.

Since adding irrigated grain production to his established citrus operations in 2014, Nortje has built an extensive enterprise grounded in soil health, rigorous planning, and precise measurement. In accepting the award, he attributed the success to his farm management team, his family, and his father, who instilled his early love for the land. Encapsulating the spirit of the evening, Nortje encouraged fellow farmers with a clear call to action: “Be positive. Be hopeful. Farm for the future.”

Profitability as the Pillar of Sustainability

Throughout the ceremony, agricultural leaders and policymakers emphasized that environmental sustainability and technological investment are inseparable from commercial viability. Grain SA Chairperson Richard Krige noted that while farmers continue to show resilience in the face of rising input costs and unpredictable market conditions, ongoing investment in soil and people requires profitable farming businesses.

This sentiment was reinforced by Minister of Agriculture Willie Aucamp in his keynote address. Stating that “profitability is what makes sustainability possible,” Minister Aucamp outlined key government priorities to support the sector, including expanded market access, strengthened agro-processing, and the active implementation of the Agriculture and Agro-processing Master Plan. Grain SA Vice-Chairperson Danie Minnaar assured attendees that Grain SA remains dedicated to delivering practical proposals and evidence-based solutions to government partnerships to ensure tangible progress on the ground.

Recognising Excellence in Farmer Development

In addition to the main award, the gala showcased the outstanding achievements of producers recognized through the Phahama Grain Phakama (PGP) farmer-development categories. These awards highlight the impact of mentorship, practical training, and targeted support in helping emerging farmers transition toward commercial viability:

  • Subsistence Farmer of the Year: Manqoba Nkosi (Donkerhoek, Mpumalanga)
  • Smallholder Farmer of the Year: Lubabalo Jordan (Bangilizwe, Eastern Cape)
  • Potential Commercial Farmer of the Year: Kopano Lentswetshipi (Mooifontein, North West)
  • New Era Commercial Farmer of the Year: Masiu Farming Enterprise, represented by Vincent Masiu (Senekal, Free State)

Collaborative Industry Investment

The success of the awards reflects strong cross-sector collaboration. Syngenta Financial Director Phote Monyamane paid tribute to the finalists for converting agricultural knowledge into practical farm results, urging the broader industry to accelerate the adoption of practical breakthroughs. Grain SA extended its gratitude to main sponsor Syngenta alongside Absa, John Deere Financial, Land Bank, and Pannar Seed for their sustained investment in South Africa’s agricultural future.
