Commonwealth Conference Puts Western Cape Agriculture on the World Stage

EventsCommonwealth Conference Puts Western Cape Agriculture on the World Stage

The Western Cape has officially welcomed agricultural leaders from across the globe as the 31st Conference of the Royal Agricultural Society of the Commonwealth (RASC) takes place in Cape Town from 1 to 5 November 2026. Western Cape Minister of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism, Dr. Ivan Meyer, welcomed delegates at the Century City Conference Centre, emphasizing the vital role of cross-border collaboration in advancing innovation, climate-smart farming, and long-term food security.

Addressing delegates—including HRH The Princess Royal, President of the RASC, and Sir Nicholas Bacon, Chairman of the RASC—Minister Meyer described agriculture as one of humanity’s greatest connectors, linking rural producers to global markets. “In a world searching for common ground, perhaps our greatest task is not simply to make our economies stronger or our industries more competitive, but to make humanity great again,” Meyer stated, urging delegates to choose cooperation over division.

Navigating Global Challenges Through Innovation

While recognizing severe industry headwinds—including climate change, water scarcity, rising input costs, and supply chain disruptions—Minister Meyer highlighted the transformative potential of precision agriculture and technology. Challenging the international assembly, Meyer noted, “The question before us is not whether agriculture will change. The question is whether we will lead that change.”

The Minister also commended Agri-Expo and its President, Chris Fourie, for their instrumental role on the organizing committee and their nearly two-century legacy of driving agricultural excellence, market access, and competitiveness within South Africa.

Why This Conference Matters to the Western Cape

Hosting the 31st RASC Conference carries immense strategic importance for the Western Cape’s agricultural economy:

Expanding Global Export Footprints: Agriculture serves as a key driver of regional economic growth, employment, exports, and rural development. Bringing together agricultural leaders, researchers, innovators, and policymakers across the Commonwealth directly strengthens international partnerships and opens new avenues for local producers competing in demanding global markets.

Attracting Direct Foreign Investment: Minister Meyer issued a clear signal to global stakeholders that the province is “open for business,” positioning the Western Cape as a prime destination for investment, research ventures, and sustainable farming partnerships.

Advancing Climate Resilience & Skills: Engaging with international experts allows local producers and agricultural institutions to share and adopt best practices in precision agriculture, technology, and climate-smart farming—essential tools for building long-term resilience in the Western Cape.

Strengthening Agricultural Heritage: Partnering with Agri-Expo to host this event reinforces the region’s historic standing as a beacon of agricultural innovation, producer support, and economic growth in Africa.

Reaffirming the Western Cape Government’s commitment to supporting exports, skills development, and climate adaptability, Minister Meyer reiterated that the province remains dedicated to fostering an environment built on innovation, sustainable growth, and strong international partnerships as the gathering concludes on 5 November.
