Selected from 159 entries submitted by 95 producers across the country, the finalist lineup provides a compelling benchmark for viticulturists, producers, and agricultural stakeholders examining the evolving technical landscape of South African viticulture.
Regional Diversity and Microclimate Adaptability
The geographical distribution of this year’s finalists highlights how effectively producers are leveraging microclimates to express distinct terroir profiles. Contenders span diverse regions, ranging from cool-climate coastal sites like Walker Bay, Elgin, Cape Agulhas, and Constantia to inland districts like Breedekloof and Robertson Valley.
For producers, this stylistic versatility demonstrates the cultivar’s remarkable adaptability. In warmer inland areas, careful canopy management and precision irrigation are preserving natural acidity and freshness. Meanwhile, maritime sites continue to capitalize on ocean breezes that extend the ripening period, allowing grapes to develop complex pyrazines and tropical thiol compounds without over-ripening.
